Georgia driver licensing offices are operated by the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS), rather than an agency formally named the DMV. Most in-person licensing services do not require an appointment, while automobile, motorcycle, and commercial road tests use a separate appointment system.
Appointments Are Required for Road Tests, Not Routine DDS Visits
The DDS appointment rule is narrower than many drivers expect. An appointment is required for a behind-the-wheel automobile, motorcycle, or CDL road test. DDS no longer requires appointments for routine in-person transactions such as renewing a license or ID, changing an address, or handling other services available at a Customer Service Center.
Road-test availability also depends on the center. A Customer Service Center can handle license renewals, replacements, knowledge exams, reinstatement work, and other transactions without necessarily offering every type of road test. The DDS location directory identifies the services available at each center.
Road-test distinction: A center being open does not mean a road-test slot is available. Road tests require a reservation, and some DDS locations do not administer them at all.
DDS currently offers appointment categories for non-commercial automobile road tests, motorcycle road tests, and CDL road tests. For CDL appointments scheduled at or after 4:00 p.m., DDS reserves those later appointments for partial skills tests.
Georgia Customer Service Centers Use More Than One Daily Schedule
A large group of Georgia DDS Customer Service Centers operates Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with Saturday service from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Athens, Albany, Between, and Cumming are examples of centers using that pattern.
Some locations use a slightly longer weekday schedule. Atlanta, Decatur, and Alpharetta list Tuesday through Friday hours of 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday hours of 7:30 a.m. to noon. These differences are why the representative hours in the schedule above should be treated as a statewide typical pattern rather than a guarantee for every center.
Customer Service Centers are generally closed Sunday and Monday. The DDS administrative headquarters follows a different schedule, so headquarters hours should not be used to determine when a licensing center is open.
Customer Service Center Hours Are Different From Contact Center Hours
| DDS service | Schedule or access rule |
|---|---|
| Customer Service Centers | Most operate Tuesday through Saturday, with the exact opening and closing time listed for the individual center. |
| Road tests | Appointment required; road-test types and availability depend on the selected center. |
| DDS Contact Center | Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. |
| Online Services | Available outside Customer Service Center operating hours for eligible transactions. |
The difference is particularly important on Mondays. Customer Service Centers are normally closed that day, while the DDS Contact Center operates Monday through Friday. Calling hours therefore should not be interpreted as evidence that a physical licensing center is open.
DDS also provides an automated license-status telephone service around the clock. That service is separate from the staffed Contact Center and does not extend the operating hours of a physical Customer Service Center.
Testing Services Depend on the Individual DDS Center
The DDS location network does not provide an identical testing menu at every office. Individual center pages identify whether a location offers non-commercial road tests, motorcycle skills tests, CDL road tests, regular knowledge exams, motorcycle knowledge exams, or CDL written exams.
For example, the Atlanta Customer Service Center lists regular, motorcycle, and CDL written exams but does not list a road test among its current services. The Between center lists non-commercial and CDL road tests as well as motorcycle skills testing. This makes the service listing as important as the opening hours when the purpose of the visit is an examination.
Knowledge testing follows a different access rule from the behind-the-wheel road test. The appointment requirement published by DDS applies specifically to road tests, so customers should not treat the road-test reservation system as a general appointment requirement for all testing or licensing transactions.
2026 DDS Closures Can Remove a Normally Open Saturday
Georgia DDS publishes a closure calendar specifically for Customer Service Centers. Because centers normally operate on Saturday, several state holiday periods create Saturday closures that are easy to miss when looking only at a normal weekly schedule.
For the remainder of 2026, DDS lists Customer Service Center closures on Saturday, September 5; Saturday, October 10; Wednesday, November 11; Thursday and Friday, November 26–27; and Thursday through Saturday, December 24–26. These dates are included in the hours schedule above as date-specific exceptions.
The closure calendar for the DDS Contact Center and headquarters is not identical to the Customer Service Center calendar. For example, the Contact Center and headquarters observe Labor Day on Monday, September 7, while Customer Service Centers are already normally closed on Monday and instead list Saturday, September 5 as a closure. The same scheduling pattern occurs around some other state holidays.
The Service You Need Determines Which DDS Time Matters
For a routine license or ID transaction, the relevant time is the operating window of the selected Customer Service Center. For a road test, the reservation time and the testing services offered at that location control the visit. For telephone assistance, the separate Monday-through-Friday Contact Center schedule applies.
Customers visiting a center must also complete the required online License/ID/Permit form. That form requirement is separate from the road-test appointment rule: completing the form does not create an appointment, and routine in-person services generally remain available without one.
