Illinois DMV services are provided through Secretary of State facilities, and the operating schedule depends partly on the facility and the transaction. A 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekday schedule is common, while Saturday access, appointments and testing windows require closer attention.
Appointment Requirements Depend on the Facility and Transaction
Illinois does not use one appointment rule for every DMV transaction. The Secretary of State’s Skip-the-Line system requires appointments for specified driver services at many of the state’s busiest facilities, including numerous Chicago-area and suburban locations.
At facilities marked as appointment-required, the rule commonly applies to driver’s license and state ID transactions, REAL ID applications and in-car driving tests. Individual facility listings identify which services require reservations, so an office can offer both appointment-based and walk-in transactions during the same business day.
License plate stickers and disability placards are designated walk-in services on the Secretary of State appointment page and do not require a standard DMV appointment. This distinction matters when an office is described as appointment-only for Driver Services; it does not automatically mean every transaction at the facility requires a reservation.
Illinois also operates seniors-only walk-in DMV locations. These facilities provide an alternative to the regular appointment system for eligible senior customers, with their own facility schedules rather than the standard hours shown for many full-service DMVs.
Saturday Service Is Available at Selected Illinois DMVs
The typical weekday pattern does not describe every facility’s full week. Many Illinois DMV locations close on Saturday and Sunday, but selected offices provide Saturday morning service.
For example, current Secretary of State facility listings show Saturday hours of 7:30 a.m. to noon at locations including Champaign and Deerfield. Chicago South also operates on Saturday mornings. Other full-service locations, such as Chicago West, Des Plaines, Orland Park and the Chicago Flagship Center, currently list Saturday as closed.
A Saturday opening should therefore be treated as a facility feature rather than a statewide DMV schedule. The same is true for specialized locations whose operating week differs from the common Monday-through-Friday pattern.
Some facilities use an unusual weekly arrangement as well. West Chicago, for example, currently lists Tuesday through Friday hours plus Saturday morning service while remaining closed on Monday. These exceptions are one reason the facility schedule matters when planning a weekend or Monday transaction.
Road Tests Can Stop Before the DMV Closes
The building’s closing time is not necessarily the final time for an in-car road test. Illinois Secretary of State facility pages state that road tests are generally available only until 60 minutes before facility closing. High customer volume can cause testing availability to end earlier.
Road testing also has operating limits that do not apply to ordinary counter transactions. Tests are not conducted after dark and may be postponed or canceled when road, weather or vehicle conditions make testing unsafe.
This means a facility showing a 5 p.m. closing time should not be interpreted as offering road tests until 5 p.m. The test window and appointment availability are the relevant clocks for a driving-test visit.
2026 Secretary of State Holiday Closures
Illinois publishes a state holiday calendar for Secretary of State offices. For the remainder of 2026, the published office-closure dates include the following:
| Holiday | Published office closure |
|---|---|
| Labor Day | Monday, September 7, 2026 |
| Columbus Day | Monday, October 12, 2026 |
| Election Day | Tuesday, November 3, 2026 |
| Veterans Day | Wednesday, November 11, 2026 |
| Thanksgiving | Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 2026 |
| Christmas | Thursday, December 24 and Friday, December 25, 2026 |
| New Year’s Day 2027 | Friday, January 1, 2027 |
The Secretary of State specifically notes that facilities operate on different schedules and that some state holidays can be observed on different days. For DMV access, the holiday calendar establishes the statewide office schedule, while the individual facility listing determines the applicable closing date for a particular location.
Staffed DMV Hours Are Different From Online and Kiosk Access
Closing time mainly controls access to staffed services. Illinois provides online options for eligible driver’s license or ID renewals, address changes, replacement credentials, driving records and other transactions that do not depend on an open service counter.
Self-service access can follow a different schedule as well. The Secretary of State facility finder includes Fast-Lane kiosks at DMV offices and retail locations, with operating times determined by the kiosk location. Some listings provide extended daily access, and certain kiosk locations are identified as available 24 hours.
For an in-person transaction, the relevant schedule is still the one attached to the required service: facility hours for ordinary counter access, an appointment window for appointment-based Driver Services, and the earlier testing cutoff when a road test is involved.
