Sources and Verification

Report incorrect hours

Hours Locator is an independent information site and is not affiliated with Pennsylvania DMV – PennDOT Driver License Centers.

Pennsylvania driver licensing offices are operated by PennDOT Driver & Vehicle Services rather than an agency formally named the DMV. The center’s door hours are only part of the schedule because road tests, CDL testing, photo services and REAL ID transactions can follow separate service rules.

Driver License Center Hours Do Not Cover Every PennDOT Service

PennDOT describes Driver License Centers as generally operating Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. That statewide pattern works well for planning a standard visit, but the transaction being requested determines whether a Driver License Center is the right location and whether the full operating window is available.

PennDOT services with separate location or timing requirements
ServiceTiming or location rule
New driver license or IDHandled at a PennDOT Driver License Center.
Road testAn appointment must be scheduled in advance.
CDL knowledge testingThe knowledge test must be started before 2 p.m.
License or ID photographPhoto License Centers handle photo service for customers with a camera card.
Same-day REAL IDAvailable at designated REAL ID Centers rather than every licensing location.
License or ID renewalMany renewals can be completed through PennDOT’s online services or an authorized Online Messenger.

PennDOT’s location finder can also filter centers by the service required. This matters for transactions such as medical-related testing, non-U.S. citizen processing, license restoration work and REAL ID applications because not every location type serves the same purpose.

Road Tests and CDL Knowledge Tests Have Their Own Time Limits

A road test cannot be treated like an ordinary walk-in transaction. PennDOT requires road tests to be scheduled in advance, including driver’s license, motorcycle and commercial driver’s license road tests. Appointment availability therefore determines the usable test time rather than the general opening and closing time of the building.

CDL knowledge testing has a different restriction. PennDOT states that CDL knowledge testing must begin before 2 p.m. A center may remain open after that cutoff, but arriving later in the afternoon does not mean a new CDL knowledge test can still be started.

These service cutoffs are especially relevant for afternoon visits. Other licensing transactions may still be handled while a testing window has already ended.

Same-Day REAL ID Service Is Limited to Designated Centers

PennDOT maintains designated REAL ID Centers where required documents can be verified and the REAL ID can be issued during the same visit. These centers use a published Tuesday-through-Saturday schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

A standard Driver License Center can also accept an in-person REAL ID application. The difference is delivery: PennDOT states that customers applying at a regular Driver License Center receive the completed REAL ID by mail, while designated REAL ID Centers provide same-day issuance.

Photo service is another separate layer. A Photo License Center is intended for customers who already have the required camera card. A location offering photo services should not automatically be assumed to provide every driver licensing, testing or REAL ID service.

PennDOT’s Remaining 2026 Holiday Closures

PennDOT publishes its own closure calendar for the Riverfront Office Center in Harrisburg and Driver License and Photo License Centers statewide. As of August 20, the remaining scheduled 2026 closure dates are:

  • September 5 and September 7 — Labor Day observance
  • October 10 and October 12 — Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day observance
  • November 11 — Veterans Day
  • November 26 — Thanksgiving Day
  • November 27 — Day after Thanksgiving
  • December 25 — Christmas holiday

The paired Saturday-and-Monday observances are worth noting because Saturday is normally part of the PennDOT Driver License Center service week. A holiday weekend can therefore remove a day that would otherwise be available for an in-person visit.

PennDOT’s published calendar also lists January 1, January 16 and January 18, 2027, as upcoming New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day closure dates.

Online PennDOT Services Continue Outside Center Hours

Many transactions do not depend on an open Driver License Center. PennDOT states that its driver and vehicle online services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Online options include driver license and photo ID renewals, duplicates, address changes, driver-history services, restoration letters, payment of certain restoration fees, REAL ID pre-verification and driver exam scheduling. This can make a center visit unnecessary for routine transactions that do not require an in-person examination, document check, photograph or other physical service.

Online Messenger Service Centers are different from PennDOT-operated Driver License Centers. Their operating hours are set by the individual location, including during holiday periods, so they should not be treated as following the statewide PennDOT center schedule.
