The Field Museum has a separate visitor-entry cutoff before its normal building closing time. Selected evening programs can extend both the closing time and the final admission window, while two major holidays are full museum closure days.
Last Admission Is Earlier Than the Museum Closing Time
For a standard operating day, the Field Museum’s published last entry is 4:00 pm. The museum remains open until 5:00 pm, so the closing time should not be treated as the latest time a new visitor can enter.
This distinction matters most for late-afternoon visits. Arriving shortly before 5:00 pm does not provide the same admission opportunity as arriving before the 4:00 pm entry cutoff. Visitors already inside can continue their visit during the remaining operating period, subject to any separate gallery, theater, or ticketed-experience schedules.
Late-Hour Programs Use a Later Entry Cutoff
The Field Museum runs selected Legendary Late Hours dates when the building stays open until 9:00 pm and last entry moves to 8:00 pm. The museum’s 2026 event calendar lists extended-hour dates in early September, and those verified schedule changes are reflected in the hours panel above.
Late opening does not automatically mean that every museum facility follows the extended building schedule. The Field also operates an After 5 at the Field program on selected evenings. During that program, the Grainger Science Hub, Crown Family PlayLab, and 3D Theater are listed as closed even though evening admission to the museum continues.
For an evening visit, the museum-wide closing time therefore answers only part of the scheduling question. A specific gallery, theater, family space, or programmed experience may stop operating earlier.
Thanksgiving and Christmas Day Are Full Museum Closures
The Field Museum identifies Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day as its standing annual closure days. For 2026, these fall on November 26 and December 25.
These are different from a late-hours event or a facility-level closure: general museum admission is not operating on those dates. The museum does not publish a complete year-round holiday-status table covering every U.S. holiday, so other holidays should not be assigned an open, reduced, or extended status without a date-specific museum announcement.
Special Exhibition Entry Can Follow Its Own Clock
A museum admission cutoff and a special-exhibition reservation are not always the same time requirement. The Field Museum currently uses timed admission for some ticketed experiences. Pokémon Fossil Museum tickets, for example, are offered in timed-entry intervals, and availability for the exhibition can be separate from general museum admission availability.
This means a ticket holder should follow the time printed for the reserved experience rather than using the museum’s general last-entry time as the exhibition appointment time. Special programs can also begin outside the ordinary visitor schedule; current Pokémon Fossil Museum programming includes separately ticketed early-morning events before the standard public opening period.
