“Getty Museum” can refer to the Getty Center in Brentwood or the Getty Villa Museum in Pacific Palisades. The two campuses use separate visitor schedules, and a planned year-long closure of the Getty Center will change which Getty location visitors can access beginning in March 2027.
Getty Center 2027–2028 Temporary Closure
The Getty Center will close to the public beginning March 15, 2027. Getty plans to reopen the Center in spring 2028 after a major campus modernization period. An exact reopening date has not yet been announced.
The closure applies to the Getty Center, not to Getty as a whole. The Getty Villa Museum is expected to remain open during the Center shutdown and continue presenting exhibitions, public programs, and events. Getty has also announced additional Villa offerings for this period, including a gallery featuring selected paintings normally associated with the Getty Center collection.
Beginning March 15, 2027, the Getty Center’s normal weekly schedule will no longer represent public availability while the temporary closure is in effect. The Getty Villa will remain a separate visitor destination with its own operating calendar and reservation system.
Timed Entry Is Required at Both Getty Museum Locations
Admission to the Getty Center and Getty Villa Museum is free, but each location requires a timed-entry reservation. Reservations are tied to the selected campus, so an entry reservation for the Center should not be treated as a Villa reservation or vice versa.
Getty’s ticketing system releases additional dates daily and normally displays reservation dates up to six weeks in advance. The reservation controls the visitor’s arrival window rather than replacing the museum’s operating schedule.
Parking is handled separately from museum admission. A free timed-entry reservation does not make standard parking free, and paying for parking does not replace the entry requirement.
Modernization Is Already Limiting Getty Center Gallery Access
The future full closure is part of a modernization program that has already begun. The Getty Center remains open under its published visitor schedule in 2026, but renovation work is limiting access to parts of the museum before the March 2027 shutdown.
Access status checked August 19, 2026: South Pavilion galleries 101, 102, and 206; West Pavilion galleries 102 and 103; and all East and North Pavilion galleries are listed as closed for renovations.
These gallery closures do not mean the entire Getty Center is currently closed. They affect particular exhibition spaces while other public areas remain available under the Center’s current visitor schedule. Getty says the work includes gallery maintenance, replacement of aging air-handling equipment, accessibility improvements, updated signage and wayfinding, and other campus work.
Museum Access and Getty Library Hours Are Separate
The public museum schedule does not define every Getty service. The Getty Library at the Center currently publishes Monday-through-Friday hours from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., separate from the museum visitor timetable. Research access can also involve appointments or other library-specific arrangements.
The published library schedule describes current access and should not be treated as a guarantee of library availability during the Getty Center’s 2027–2028 public closure.
Annual Closures Apply to Both Museum Campuses
The Getty Center and Getty Villa Museum are annually closed on New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Both locations also announce early closing on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Getty does not publish one permanent closing time for those two early-closing dates. The usable entry period depends on the date-specific museum schedule and reservation availability rather than a fixed annual early-closing hour.
Different Getty Access Rules Can Apply on the Same Date
- The selected campus schedule determines whether the Getty Center or Getty Villa Museum is operating.
- The timed-entry reservation determines the permitted visitor arrival window.
- A gallery renovation notice can restrict part of the Center without closing the entire campus.
- Library access follows its own published schedule and research-access rules.
- Beginning March 15, 2027, the Getty Center’s temporary closure overrides its normal weekly public schedule until Getty announces and reaches the reopening date.
