“Getty Museum” can refer to the Getty Center in Brentwood or the Getty Villa Museum in Pacific Palisades. The two locations have different closed days and visitor schedules, and each uses timed-entry reservations.
The Getty Center and Getty Villa Follow Different Schedules
The Getty Center and Getty Villa are separate museum campuses rather than two buildings operating under one daily timetable. Selecting the correct location is therefore the first step when checking whether Getty is open on a particular day.

The alternating closed days are particularly important. A Monday visit may be possible at the Villa while the Center is closed, whereas the Center may be available on a Tuesday when the Villa is closed. Saturday also differs because the Center maintains a later public closing time than the Villa.
Timed Entry Determines When Visitors Can Arrive
General admission to both Getty museums is free, but a timed-entry reservation is required. Getty maintains separate reservation pages for the Center and the Villa, so a reservation for one campus should not be treated as admission to the other.
Reservation calendars release additional dates daily and generally display entry options up to six weeks in advance. The time printed on the reservation governs arrival, even when the museum remains open for several hours afterward. Same-day spaces may appear when capacity is available, but they should not be assumed without an active entry reservation.
Parking is handled separately from museum admission. A timed-entry reservation does not make parking free, and parking availability or payment does not replace the entry requirement.
Both Getty Museums Share Annual Holiday Closures
The Getty Center and Getty Villa Museum are closed annually on New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Both locations also announce early closing on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Getty does not publish one permanent early-closing time for those two eves on its main visitor pages. The applicable reservation calendar and date-specific visitor notice determine the usable entry window when an early closure is scheduled.
The Museum Schedule Does Not Cover Every Getty Facility
Hours for research, dining, shopping, and other on-site services can differ from the public museum schedule. The Getty Research Library, for example, publishes weekday hours from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This means the library can have Monday availability even though the Getty Center museum is closed that day. Research visits may also involve separate appointment or access arrangements.
Food service follows its own operating clock. At the Getty Villa, the café opens later than the museum and uses a longer service period on weekends, while its kitchen stops preparing food before all ready-to-go service ends. Getty Center restaurants, terraces, and coffee carts also publish individual schedules and last-seating times rather than remaining open for every hour that the campus is accessible.
An Open Getty Campus Can Have Limited Gallery Access
Public opening hours describe access to the campus, not a guarantee that every gallery, garden, restaurant, or research area is operating. Renovation work, exhibition installation, maintenance, and ticketed programs can affect specific spaces without closing the entire museum.

Evening performances and other scheduled programs can also use event-specific arrival times. An event ticket or program listing should be treated as a separate schedule from ordinary gallery admission.
Which Getty Time Applies to Your Visit?
- Use the selected museum’s public hours for a general gallery, architecture, or garden visit.
- Use the timed-entry reservation for the permitted arrival window.
- Use the Getty Research Library schedule for research access rather than the Center museum schedule.
- Use the individual dining listing when restaurant seating, café service, or food pickup is the purpose of the visit.
- Use the program time for a performance, tour, lecture, or other ticketed event.
- Treat a gallery-closure notice separately from the open or closed status of the full campus.
