Hours Locator is an independent information site and is not affiliated with Smithsonian Museums and National Zoo.

The Smithsonian does not operate under one closing time. Museum buildings, the National Zoo, interior exhibits, ticketed entries, and individual activity spaces can follow different schedules.

Smithsonian Hours Depend on the Building

Many Smithsonian museums on the National Mall use daytime visitor hours, but that pattern does not cover the entire institution. The Smithsonian American Art Museum stays open later than many Mall museums, the Renwick Gallery follows a separate schedule, and the National Zoo changes its closing time by season.

New York locations also need to be treated separately from Washington, D.C. museums. Cooper Hewitt has its own admission and closure policies, while the National Museum of the American Indian’s George Gustav Heye Center publishes hours for its New York building.

Examples of Smithsonian location and entry-hour differences
Location or service Schedule distinction
National Museum of Natural History The museum lists daily visitor hours of 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and does not require general-admission passes.
National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The museum lists daily hours of 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but free timed-entry passes are required for admission.
National Museum of African American History and Culture Monday opening is later than the rest of the week, and the final visitor-entry time is earlier than the building’s closing time.
Smithsonian American Art Museum This museum uses later opening and closing times than many National Mall locations.
Renwick Gallery The gallery has its own schedule even though it is part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Smithsonian’s National Zoo Zoo grounds, indoor animal buildings, final grounds entry, and final indoor-exhibit entry use separate times.

Last Entry Can Be Earlier Than Museum Closing

A listed closing time does not always represent the final time a visitor may enter. The National Museum of African American History and Culture, for example, publishes a last-entry time that comes well before the galleries finish closing. Its store and exhibition areas also begin closing in stages near the end of the day.

The National Zoo uses two admission cutoffs. Entry to the grounds ends before the grounds close, while admission to indoor animal buildings ends separately. A visitor arriving near closing may therefore be unable to enter even though other guests remain inside.

Timed-entry passes create another clock. A museum may be open, but access can depend on the time printed on the visitor’s pass. The Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., the African American History and Culture Museum, the National Zoo, and Cooper Hewitt use ticket or pass requirements that differ from most other Smithsonian locations.

The Zoo Uses Seasonal and Facility-Specific Hours

The National Zoo’s schedule should not be inferred from Smithsonian museum hours. Its published summer season runs from March 15 through September 14, while winter hours begin September 15 and continue through March 14.

During the summer schedule, the grounds stay open later than during winter. Final entry to the park is one hour before the grounds close. Indoor exhibits open after the grounds and stop admitting visitors 30 minutes before their scheduled closing time.

Entry passes are required for Zoo visitors. Parking is handled through a separate pass system, so possession of an entry pass does not reserve a parking space.

Some Galleries and Activity Spaces Close Earlier

Operating hours for the main building do not guarantee that every interior space is available until closing. At the National Museum of American History, Wegmans Wonderplace and Draper Spark!Lab use shorter daytime schedules and are closed on different weekdays.

Special exhibitions, gardens, libraries, cafés, museum stores, and interactive spaces may also publish hours separate from the surrounding museum. This distinction matters when the purpose of a visit is a specific facility rather than general gallery access.

The Smithsonian Institution Building, known as the Castle, can also operate under temporary visitor dates instead of a permanent year-round schedule. Its current listing identifies a limited operating period through September 7, 2026, demonstrating why the Castle should not be grouped automatically with standard museum hours.

Holiday Closures Are Not Identical at Every Location

Most Smithsonian museums are open throughout the year except December 25. Cooper Hewitt is an important exception because it also closes on Thanksgiving. The National Zoo likewise identifies December 25 as a closed day.

Temporary programs and evening events may extend access beyond normal gallery hours without changing the regular daytime schedule. Event admission, stores, cafés, or selected public areas may remain available while ordinary exhibitions are closed.

Service clock to use: For general gallery access, use the individual museum’s visitor hours. For a timed-entry location, use the pass time and last-entry rule. For the Zoo, compare grounds hours with indoor-building and final-entry times.
