Social Security field offices generally provide public service from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on regular weekdays, but an office visit is no longer the first step for many requests. SSA has expanded online processing and appointment scheduling in 2026, including a newer process for original and replacement Social Security card applications.

Is Social Security Open Today?

Social Security field offices are typically open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The hours tool above uses that public service schedule and the federal holiday calendar to determine the normal office status for the date.

An open office does not automatically mean that going there is the best way to complete a Social Security request. SSA now routes many tasks through online services first and can direct a user to a phone or in-person appointment when additional help is required.

SSA recommends appointments for office visits. The current SSA office locator tells visitors to make an appointment before going to an office, and the agency’s scheduling system can determine whether a request may be completed online instead.

Do You Need to Visit a Social Security Office?

Many Social Security requests can be handled without waiting at a field office. SSA provides online services for benefit applications, account information, benefit verification letters, Medicare-related tasks, claim status information and several Social Security number and card services.

For requests that need personal assistance, SSA’s current appointment service asks a series of questions and connects the user with the appropriate service. The resulting appointment may be by phone or in person.

This means the 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. field office schedule remains useful for an actual office visit, but it should not be treated as the operating window for every Social Security transaction. Online services can be available outside field office hours, and some requests never require a visit.

Social Security Card Requests Changed in 2026

SSA introduced a streamlined Social Security number and card application process in February 2026. People who need an original Social Security number or a replacement Social Security card can now start through the Social Security Number and Card service.

After the online application is submitted, SSA can process an eligible request entirely online or direct the applicant to schedule an appointment at a local Social Security office or Card Center. Starting online also allows SSA to identify required documents before an in-person visit.

When an office visit is required, applicants may be able to self-schedule it as part of the online process. Original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency may still be required for requests that cannot be completed electronically.

A Social Security card is not printed at the field office. After SSA completes an approved card request, the card is mailed to the applicant. The online process should therefore be started before making an unscheduled trip solely to obtain a card.

Social Security Regular and Weekend Office Hours

Most Social Security field offices use typical public service hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. These are general in-person hours rather than a promise that every service is available as a walk-in transaction.

Field offices are generally closed to the public on Saturday and Sunday. Online SSA services remain a separate service channel, so a weekend closure does not prevent users from accessing many account and application functions through SSA.gov.

Some Social Security card requests can also be routed to a dedicated Card Center. The current office locator identifies Card Centers where applicable and can indicate which services are handled by a particular office.

Social Security Holiday Hours

Social Security field offices follow the federal holiday calendar. Offices are generally closed on New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, including applicable observed dates.

Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and the day after Thanksgiving are not automatically federal office closures. Unless a separate federal or agency closure applies, those weekdays can remain regular service days.

Temporary office closures are handled separately from the normal holiday calendar. Construction, emergencies and other site-specific conditions can affect a field office without changing the national weekday schedule.

Office, Phone and Online Service Use Different Schedules

Social Security provides several service channels, and their availability should not be confused with field office opening and closing times.

Local field officeTypical public service hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; appointments are recommended.
Appointment systemCan route a request to online service, phone help or an in-person appointment depending on the task.

National phone serviceSSA provides representative and automated telephone assistance on schedules separate from field office public hours.
Online servicesMany account, benefit, document, application and status functions can be used without visiting a field office.

2026 Field Office Wait Times Have Improved

SSA’s current performance reporting shows that field office service has become faster while more transactions move through online channels. Through May 2026, the agency reported an average combined field office wait time of just under 21 minutes for nearly 20 million visitors, about a 31% improvement from fiscal year 2024.

SSA has also reported hundreds of millions of online transactions during fiscal year 2026. The shift toward online processing does not eliminate field offices, but it changes when an in-person visit is necessary and reduces the number of routine requests that have to begin at an office counter.

The current figures are available through SSA’s service performance page.

Which Social Security Service Should You Use?

  • Original or replacement Social Security card: start with SSA’s online Social Security number and card process.
  • Online-eligible request: complete the transaction online when SSA offers that option.
  • Request requiring documents or in-person verification: use the appointment path provided during the online process.
  • Benefits or account task: check whether the service is available through a personal my Social Security account before scheduling an office visit.
  • In-person help: use the SSA locator to identify the appropriate field office or Card Center and make an appointment.
  • Temporary office closure: review the current office information before traveling even when the normal national schedule shows the office as open.

Do I need an appointment to visit Social Security?

SSA recommends making an appointment before visiting a field office or Card Center. Its appointment system may also determine that the requested task can be completed online instead.

Can I get a replacement Social Security card without visiting an office?

Depending on the request, yes. SSA can process some replacement card applications entirely online. Other applicants can begin online and then self-schedule an office or Card Center appointment when documents or additional verification are required.

Are Social Security offices still open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.?

Most field offices continue to use 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. as their typical weekday public service schedule. Local office details and temporary closures can still affect a particular location.
