Texas does not operate every motor-vehicle service through one statewide “DMV” office system. Driver license appointments, county title services and TxDMV regional-center transactions each follow a different schedule.
Driver License Office Hours Are Appointment-Based
Texas Department of Public Safety driver license offices provide in-person driver license and identification card services by appointment. This appointment rule also applies to driving tests conducted through a DPS driver license office.
The appointment calendar determines when customers can be served within an office’s posted operating day. An office being open does not create a general walk-in service window, and arriving before the building closes does not guarantee that an unscheduled transaction can be completed.
DPS states that limited same-day appointments may appear online for most office locations. A same-day opening is still a reserved appointment slot rather than unrestricted walk-in access. Availability can also differ by the transaction selected, such as an original license, renewal, identification card or driving test.
Texas DMV Services Are Split Among Three Office Types
The office responsible for a transaction is as important as its opening time. Texas DPS, county tax assessor-collectors and TxDMV regional service centers handle different parts of the state’s driver and vehicle system.

County tax offices may operate multiple branches or substations. Some counties also make registration-renewal services available through approved subcontractors, including participating retail locations. Those outlets should not be treated as full-service title offices because the transactions they accept can be limited.
Regional Center Hours Include a Monthly Service Gap
TxDMV regional service centers use a more consistent weekday schedule than county tax offices, but they are not the normal destination for every registration or title transaction. TxDMV directs most motorists seeking routine title and registration work to their county tax office.
Regional service centers are normally open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time on weekdays. They close for state-agency holidays and staff-development days. The centers also close from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month for a staff meeting, creating a later public opening on that morning.
Dallas North status: TxDMV currently identifies the Dallas North Regional Service Center as temporarily closed until further notice. Dallas-area customers may need another regional center or the appropriate county tax office, depending on the transaction.
Weekend Appointments Are Not a Statewide Standard
Routine Texas DPS driver license service is organized around each office’s appointment calendar rather than a universal Saturday or Sunday schedule. DPS has offered Saturday appointments at selected offices during limited programs, but those announcements have applied to named locations and specific date ranges.
A past Saturday-service initiative therefore does not establish permanent weekend hours for the same office. County tax offices independently determine whether any branch offers Saturday service, while TxDMV regional service centers follow their published Monday-through-Friday schedule.
State and County Offices Can Follow Different Holiday Calendars
TxDMV regional service centers close when Texas state agencies are closed, as well as for designated staff-development periods. DPS driver license appointment availability is likewise affected by state office closures.
County tax assessor-collector offices are local government offices. Their holiday schedules, early closing times and additional closure dates can be set by the county rather than by the TxDMV regional-center calendar. A state regional center and a nearby county title office should not be assumed to have identical holiday access.
This distinction also applies to retail subcontractors that process certain registration renewals. A participating store may be open while its motor-vehicle service is unavailable, or the service counter may stop processing renewals before the store itself closes.
Use the Schedule for the Office That Handles the Transaction
Driver license and identification card visits follow the DPS office and appointment schedule. Routine vehicle registration, title-transfer and placard transactions generally follow the relevant county tax office schedule. A specialized title or registration matter assigned to TxDMV follows the regional service center schedule instead.
Online renewal eligibility is separate from physical office access. Eligible Texans may be able to renew a driver license, identification card or vehicle registration online even when the corresponding public counter is closed.
